Mermaiden by jayfrench Mermaiden by jayfrench
This was a Fantasy Portrait, but the subject was so perfect for the material, I've added this one to the "Mythic Beauties" series and titled it "Mermaiden." Prismacolor Pencil and Photoshop finishing.

Great job on the scales! I like that extra little fin you added to her tail, and she's cute, too!

Tankew kindly! I was fairly happy with this sucker myself. Any suggestions to improve my general realism?

The only thing that bothers me in this piece is her upper gum line and upper teeth. The first thought that came to me is that her mouth looks like that alien's in "Enemy Mine." If you showed less or no gum, and defined her two front teeth a touch more, I think that would really improve this lovely mermaid.

In keeping with the extra fishy look you gave her tail with the extra fins, she'd look a bit more exotic with webbing between her fingers, too. You could even show a hint of gills in her neck somewhat obscured by her hair.

But, as I said originally; she's a beauty and you did a great job on her overall!

I agree, and thanks for your kind words and interest.
In my defense, this was a contract portrait, so I had an actual person's face to represent accurately. She had that "gumline" thing.
That's a good point, though. I've already produced the portrait, so I should tweak the image for my own collection.
Thanks again!
